HP6550b probook

Howdy,

I'm a newbie to this forum and I'm looking for a bit of help to get  my old 6550b probook up and running again. I know it's old but it does what I need because it's one of few notebooks that has a real serial port and I need that.

 

The notebook was running fine with Win7Pro (64bit) and Office 10 (32bit) along with a number of utilities I run until it had a terminal HDD failure. I replaced the HDD with a new one and I now need to build the system back up again but I'm having difficulties working out which drivers to install. I'm not a computer geek so I'm flying blind on most of this stuff.

 

I can work out the simple issues like audio drivers, chipset drivers &c. but I'm having difficulty with the rest of the driver choices. The HP support pages offer a number of drivers that appear to refer tot he same devices. For example, there are 9 or so network drivers. Do I install them all, are there specific ones I need to install or are there ones I need to avoid?

 

I've tried to navigate the support pages and each time I do I end up with different results. Things like Win7Pro being real slow to start (even after all the updates are installed) or other times, the notebook starts up but takes a very long time to log onto my WiFi network. I also use MS Security Essentials. Sometimes, it doesn't start and I need to turn it on manually. All weird stuff that I can't seem to work out. The notebook passes all its own self-tests and it doesn't detect any RAM or other hardware errors.

 

Can anyone advise on a definitive set of drivers I need to install to get the notebook running properly?

Care Pack or Extended Warranty Available on 15-da0002dx

I bought my laptop from Amazon, and realized the Manufacturer's Warranty expired at the beginning of December.  I've searched for about 45 minutes on the HP website and online, and I cannot locate an option to purchase either Care Pack or an Extended Warranty on my system.  Is it available direct from HP?  If not, is it still available through licensed resellers?

HP Envy 17t (17-ce100 / 6UX02AV) Touch Screen and TouchPad drivers for Windows 10 1909 19H2 Needed

I just received my new HP Envy 17t (17-ce100 / 6UX02AV) and  I performed a clean install of Windows 10 1909 (19H2).  To my surprise, the current Windows 10 drivers for the touch screen and touchpad do not work.  I get an error saying that my OS is not supported.  I've read several posts that tell you to edit the install.cmd file using notepad and change 19H1 to 19H2 as well as changing 10.0.18362 to 10.0.18363.  I have done this and still was unable to install the drivers.  I would think that HP would be able to update the drivers since Windows 10 version 1909 came out in November 2019.  Does anyone have any other suggestions?  This is really bad for HP...  I spent well over $1000 for this laptop and am very disappointed.  I may be sending it back. Thanks for any help in advance.

PCI Device & SM Bus Controller Drivers Needed

Reinstalled Windows 10 and device manager states that PCI and SM Bus Controller are unknown (yellow exclamation mark). No utility tool updates them including HP Assistant, Intel utility tool, Intel Chipset tool, or Windows Updates. Not sure where to locate these. I'd appreciate any help.

Wi-Fi and battery icons don't appear on the taskbar

As shown in the screenshot attached, I need to click on the ^(upward arrow) to see the Wi-Fi icon. It used to be near the speaker icon. But one day, it was suddenly gone. I switch between different networks frequently, and it would be convenient if the icon were readily available. And about the battery icon, it sometimes doesn't show up at all until I restart. So I have to go into the settings to check the battery percentage. It disappears randomly and comes back when I turn on next time. Does anyone know why this happens and how to fix it?

HP loptop freezes on the HP logo HELP?!

Hi, my loptop was working perfectly  , but now I can't turn on it freezes while loading and windows is not even starting only HP logo is showing. I cannot get BIOS to turn on.  So what to do ? What's the issue?

The specs say this notebook should have a fingerprint scanner. When attempting to set up fingerprint sign in, Windows 10 says, "This option is currently unavailable. Click here to learn more," and, "We couldn't find a fingerprint scanner compatible with Windows Hello Fingerprint." Notebook is just purchased, one week old.

Keys Randomly Stop Working

This problem started last week.

Randomly my 5,6 and - keys stop working.  Then they just start working again for hours and then once again stop.

Removed the keys and cleaned under them.

The laptop was bought in 2012 and used for surfacing and watching videos

 

I have to use the on-screen keyboard in-between.

I did a Microsoft troubleshooting and tells me the keyboard is working with no problems.

It was suggested on another forum to buy a new keyboard and get someone to replace the current one.

 

I am not very tech-savvy so please keep simple, sorry if the wrong board.

HP sure click, possible to exclude downloaded files or folders?

Hi,

 

I have sure click installed on my laptop and everytime I download an excel file it opens it in its own secure container, which is good from the security point of view but before I can work with it I need to open the download folder and remove protection. It's a tedious process and I trust that the file doesn't contain any malware because I download the same excel file from eBay every day. Is it possible to exclude certain files/folders/download locations from sure click? I can't find any option to configure this in the desktop console but I don't wish to remove sure click completely either. Thanks.

I purchased this laptop from QVC in 2017 but never activated MS Office with the information provided in the laptop packaging. and of course, I've lost that information. How can I get MSOffice activated. I am in need especially of MSWord for resume building.

AMD Radeon Settings not opening/not on laptop

Hi there!

 

I recently bought a Samsung HD monitor and connected my laptop to it via HDMI and was quite disappointed with the image quality. After some research I find this might be able to be fixed by changing some settings in the Radeon Graphics Settings (set from RGB Limited to RGB Full apparently). The trouble is, I can't find this anywhere on my laptop.

 

I right click on the desktop and it doesn't show. I navigated to C:\Program Files\AMD\CCC2\Install and there doesn't appear to be anything in there. I'd like to be able top open the Radeon Graphics Settings menu and I'm not sure how to go about it. If there's something I'm missing or if I need to download it?

Disassemble Spectre 500 Mouse

Hi,

I believe there may have been a small amount of orange juice that got on my mouse (from the smooshed orange I found in my backpack) and now the button is sticky. Is there a way to disassemble this mouse without breaking it? No visible holes for screws and it seems only the bottom is able to be removed (the rest looks like one solid piece). It seems like it wants to come off however I do not want to break any clips inside so I haven't applied that much force yet. Any knowledge out there of where to start?
